Renowned media scholar and author Mara Einstein, Ph.D. headlined a recent series of events hosted by Communication Solutions for a Diverse Society (CS4DS), which explored how communication arts and sciences can advance sustainability in research, practice, and public life. The events, held in recognition of MSU’s Earth Month, brought together faculty, students, and campus partners to examine the expansive scope of sustainability—from environmental action to ethical media practices.
This episode of MSU Today explores how race and identity influence the reception and comprehension of news. Michigan State University scholars Marisa Smith and Christina Myers join the discussion to share their expertise. Marisa Smith, an assistant professor of advertising and journalism, examines the effects of political information and disinformation, focusing on how race, identity, and politics shape public policy support, political polarization, civic engagement, and political opinion.
Ed Timke, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Advertising and Public Relations, has co-produced a series of three podcasts focusing on themes of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).

Honoring hip-hop’s 50th anniversary and working alongside an engaging curriculum design, Dr. Myers hosted a panel of Michigan legends. The panel really gave students an amazing background for thinking about hip hop’s contribution to community-building, empowerment, and joy. Efforts like this are critical opportunity creators, where students can explore ideas and pathways that they love but that might not be built into a traditional communication and journalism degree program.

Students of 42PointSEVEN integrated marketing communication agency recently had the opportunity to see how research can be translated into everyday practice during a recent demonstration by Assistant Professor Ed Timke. The demonstration session introduced students to the Culturally Resilient Training Card Deck developed through research conducted by Timke in collaboration with instructional designer and intercultural specialist, Terra Gargano, who is also Professorial Lecturer and Program Director at American University in Washington, D.C.
During the demonstration and discussion, students engaged in exercises that helped them build awareness of perspectival differences in solving problems in teams. Student practitioners also reflected on questions and prompts provided on the cards, and their applicability to their strategic and creative work within the agency.
